Introduced to the public market in October of 1995 by Merck and Company, Inc., Fosamax, an oral bisphosphonate product, has been linked to many medical problems. Fosamax dangers include esophageal cancer; teeth and jaw decay, which could be early indications of osteonecrosis of the jaw, often referred to as "dead jaw syndrome" or ONJ; atypical thigh fractures known as diaphyseal and subtrochanteric femur fractures; as well as other esophagus, throat and stomach problems like inflammation; and bone, muscle, and joint pain.

Fosamax's recommended dosage for treating osteoporosis varies, but is generally either 70 mg once a week or 10 mg once a day. Overdosing is possible and the symptoms can vary, including: heartburn or indigestion; low levels of calcium in the blood; and ulcers in the stomach, intestines, or esophagus. Moreover, at this time, there are not any studies nor is there any evidence demonstrating how long the effects of Fosamax will last in an individual's body.

Fosamax has recently been in the news. In June 2010 a jury awarded $8 million to a Florida woman for compensatory damages in a Fosamax lawsuit. The woman sued Merck alleging that Fosamax damaged her jaw and has suffered severe dental and jaw problems. There are over 1,280 plaintiff groups that involve nearly 900 lawsuits by patients alleging Fosamax caused them ONJ.

Also recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in October 2010 a label change was required for Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs. Labels needed to be updated to include the risks of possible rare femur fractures occurring in patients using bisphosphonates to help treat osteoporosis.
